There are just some people that you can picture for any role you can imagine. As far as the role of Marshall Dillon – that incredible television role played by James Arness in Gunsmoke – neither Brad Pitt or Ryan Reynolds would come to mind.

According to some recent ‘Gunsmoke’ movie news it seems that both Pitt and Reynolds are high on the list of highly popular actors who are in the running for the lead role.

For those who are too young to have watched the long running Gunsmoke series, you missed out on a good series. Marshall Matt Dillon stood tall above the Kansas prairies as the lone source of justice. Somehow, I do not see either Brad Pitt or Ryan Reynolds as Dillon.

Don’t get me wrong. I love both Pitt and Reynolds. I think that they do an amazing job in their respective niches. Brad Pitt as the scheming psychopath or high class con artist. Reynolds pretty much has the hokey comedy scene down pat, and can even do a great job in a horror remake. But, an iconic western?

Reports are that CBS Films wants to bring the ‘Gunsmoke’ franchise back and more contemporary. While I would be the first to say, “Oh, heck yeah!”, I feel that they need to find another top quality actor that can match the historical aspect of Dillon, can play an action part, and has deep connection with the character.

Seeing Kevin Costner in this type of role would not be too much of a stretch. Neither would someone like Harrison Ford, or even Bruce Willis. Now, that would be an idea! Get rid of Pitt and Reynolds. Bring in someone like Bruce Willis to shake Dillon up a little and add to the authenticity of the period.

Of course, this is still all up in the air. There is no director that has stepped up to the plate and sign on for this project yet. Hopefully it will get a little bit of life and begin growing. But, Pitt? Reynolds?
