What I’m Watching Tonight; Death Race
Tonight I’m going to watch a movie I’ve been wanting to see, but just never got around to it. Death Race stars one of my favorite actors at the moment in Jason Statham. The Transporter movies are just a fun thrill ride and his role in Crank is just bad ass.
The simple plot of the movie is about an ex-con, Jensen Ames, being forced by the warden of a notorious prison to compete in our post-industrial world’s most popular sport: a car race in which inmates must brutalize and kill one another on the road to victory. Sounds like fun.
I’ll post an update as soon as the ending credits begin to roll.
Update: Review of Death Race with Jason Statham
There are some movies that you just want to sit down and enjoy. You don’t want to think. You don’t want to go through emotional ups and downs. You don’t want to have to strain and concentrate so hard that you miss out on the fun of watching a movie.
Death Race is a movie where you don’t have to do any of that. All you have to do is sit back and enjoy the action on the screen. And there is plenty of that.
Death Race is your typical speed, carnage, explosion, and don’t care how much destruction is wrought kind of movie. The “death race” is just that. A race where your death is pretty assured.
Jason Statham stars as Jensen Ames who is basically recruited into racing for the Warden, played by Joan Allen, of a prison that sponsors a globally televised race to the death. Everything is as corrupt and crooked as it can be and it seems that the prison operates on it’s own rules. Or, the rules that the warden creates as she goes along. Joan Allen, in a role that is not her standard, does a great job of playing Warden Hennessey.
Offered his freedom for participating in the race, and taking the place of fan favorite Frankenstein (who just so happens to be dead), Jensen must now fight both the jail officials and his arch nemesis in the race, Machine Gun Joe, who is played by Tyrese Gibson.
I loved it.
The story isn’t earth shattering or going to win any screenplay awards, but it was fun. The races were all jam-packed with great action and effects. Machine Gun Joe lives up his name as he lives by pumping shells into the cars he is racing. There isn’t too many twists and plot changes so you don’t have to worry about missing important information or trying to decipher what just happened. You just sit back, relax, and enjoy.
Jason Statham does his usual swarthy job of playing the protagonist who has to get out of a jam by shooting, fighting, and just “out-toughing” everyone else.
If you have a penchant for action movies, love mindless carnage, and could live without a stellar screenplay… Death Race is for you. And even if you just want to watch an average movie…. Death Race might fit your need for a slow night.
